For the last few weeks everyone in mrmayo’s class has been reading about advertising. I did and essay on immersive advertising. I hope you like it and here it is!

Deceptive Advertising: Immersed in our Brains

Many children like to go on the computer or watch TV. Whether it be to watch your favorite show, or just to check your email many children spend time in front of a screen. However because the amount of time children spend in front of the TV is such a well know fact many advertising agencies see this as a marketing jackpot. They use a type of advertising called immersive advertising. With the number of kids in front of a screen today it is easy for advertising agencies to influence kids to buy their products.

Immersive advertising is when companies get deals with on screen things like computer games TV shows or movies. Then the companies stick in advertisements for anything imaginable. The idea behind immersive advertising is if young children see their favorite character eating fruit snacks of a certain brand they will go and ask their parents to buy that certain type of snacks. This will also inspire those children to remember the snacks when they are older and buy that companies product even after their younger years. This will make people continue to buy those snacks and make the company that produces them even more money.

There are many different examples of where one can find immersive advertising. One web site that is a great example is neopets. In neopets you can create a cute little character and take care of it. What the many children that play neopets don’t know is that they are being a little marketing guinea pig and you are looking at immersive advertising as you play. The neopets site advertises unhealthy food such as McDonalds and Fruit Loops and the companies hope that the small children playing will see this and want to go buy McDonalds or Fruit Loops.

Immersive advertising is very dangerous and is the most affective type of advertising for today’s generation. Because of the time spent in front of a screen children will see and be influenced by immersive advertising and will want to buy more products. Some people would ask why this type of advertising is considered deceptive when you can see the advertisements clearly. The reason this is deceptive advertising is that once kids see this logo they will want to try it, and if they like it the company has another little consumer ready to buy their products.

Advertising agencies defense is that they are not breaking any laws. Also they say that without advertising the economy would collapse. While this is true there is an unethical factor in it. When children see the advertising enough they will go out and ask their parents to buy it. If this product is unhealthy like McDonalds then the child will have a greater chance of being unhealthy because they ate at McDonalds when they were younger. Sticking advertisements into games and movies that small children watch or play is just plain wrong.

Well their it is.

PS: Thanks for the blogrolls everyone.

Hi everybody! I’m doing an essay in mrmayos class and here’s my intro. Hope you all like it!

Deceptive advertising, I’ve posted about it before and I’m going to do so again. Today I’m describing deceptive advertising where marketing agencies put ads for any product imaginable into things like movies, TV  shows and video games. This is deceptive advertising because when children see their favorite characters eating/buying/wearing/talking about a certain product the idea is that they will want to eat/buy/wear/talk about that product to and will bring in money for their company.

Example: YAAH! I’m Dora and i like Big Al’s popcorn! Its poppin fresh!!!

I think this is definitely the worst type of advertising because with all the technology their are so many ways this could be used to take advantage of kids.

For homework today mrmayo made us read and article about how tough it was to sell merchandise to kids. And what some corporations are doing to sell stuff to kids. For instance they put well know characters such as Dora or Elmo on products that kids want or need. Such as band-aids, backpacks or toothbrushes.

Something interesting that i read in this article was that kids have a big impact on influencing parents to buy stuff. Stuff such as cars or family restraunts.

Another thing that was interesting  was that the U.S. Department of Health signed an agreement with Dreamworks to have the popular movie character Shrek tell kids to “Get up and play an hour a day.” What i find interesting though is that companies also use Shrek to promote unhealthy food such as candy and cereal.

I think that the government can’t make kids stop eating unhealthy, or play outside. But they can crack down on advertising….. which is what i would like to see happen

For homework today I read an article on different types of advertising and frankly it was a bit scary. I found out that advertising agencies use psychology to get kids to buy things. And if that’s not weird enough i also found that they people at the marketing agency used a type of advertising that was amply named “Stealth Marketing”. This is when the agencies find the coolest kids in the neighbor hood and pay them to buy or wear certain things from that company. So if anyone comes knocking on my door i’ll hid under my bed.

(that was a joke people…you can laugh)

Anyways the Agencies also market rated R movies for kids that can’t legally see them. Which means that the agencies are actually urging kids to BREAK THE LAW.

And as usual ill say my opinion at the end: This is crazy.

Alright everybody its word time! Today one9 has a brand new word for you. Its immersive advertising!!! Immersive advertising is when companies stick advertising into stuff that you see. For example a coca-cola logo in a movie. But today’s post is not about coca-cola. Its  about these little critters called neopets. Neopets are cute little animated animals and were pretty big about five years ago. Right now the little animals are busy poisoning the mind of our next generation of children.

The way these neopets are doing this brings us write back to immersive advertising. The programmers stick companies such as McDonalds into their games to advertise the companies and influence kids to buy their stuff.

My opinion is that this is getting out of hand. I think that it is almost criminal to put advertising to large companies such as McDonalds into games that small children play.

I thought we were trying to fight obesity here people!!

Yesterday mrmayo’s class did a video conference with some kids in Nevada. Today mrmayo asked me to post about and and i have to say that i really enjoyed it. I think its really cool that you can talk with someone from so far away and share work with them as well. I have also liked sharing our children’s books with everyone because i thought we all did great jobs on them and its good that we can share with others and show them our work that we worked so hard on. In the video conference the kids told us about their favorite children’s books and asked us questions about the process of making them. All in all i really enjoyed the experience and hope that the people that look at our books really like them.

PS: If you want to see the book me and my group did look down a bit on this page.

Today in mrmayo’s  class we saw a video about the problems in North Korea. N. Korea was ruled by Kim II-sung, and boy oh boy would i not want to live there. For starters every morning music plays on loudspeakers and wakes you up at promptly 7:00. Then you must pay tribute to your leader. Then you go off to work, but theirs a catch. You can’t look each other in the eye. Oh and you can’t complain either. Also their are “chosen ones” that are allowed to talk to foreigners, but no one else can. Now if you can disregard all of that stuff then you just have to get used to the gigantic statues of your leader, the untrue fairy tales about how great he is, and the fact that the elderly people are relocated. If you can get past all these things then its really just a matter of looking back and marveling at this 55 year dictatorship.

But seriosuly folks you really have to wonder……….

How do these people stand it?? I know if  i lived thier i’d be hateing life. So you just have to think, how do people live with this all the time?

Well imagine that you have all these false stories of greatness and being forced to warship your leader like a god. After hearing that for 55 years anyone would believe.

On Sunday morning Pakistan awoke to chaos. Private media had been ordered to stop broadcasting by Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf. Editors from newspapers and local television stations said that their broadcasts were interfered and their phone lines were cut. One station was even raided by police that wanted to take away the broadcasting equipment that they had. President Musharraf says that this is to help stop terrorism and by banning the media terrorists won’t have an influence on the people. If you ask me I think that Musharraf’s decision to control the people with  the military will only lead to more violence and his plan will soon come crashing down on his head.

Imagen one day when you are surfing the web, you are just about to go to your favorite website, when out of nowhere a little cartoon police officer rides across the screen in a little bike. “Remeber not to go onto any inappropriate sites” it says. Now if that happened to me i’d either go yell at my mom for puting this on my computer or give my computer an exorcisim.
However in China, people are going to have to get used to this. Apperently to help the people the little cartoon figures tell people to stay away from sites that the government says are not appropriate. I know that i would not like this at all becasue these are some of the sites blocked:
*youtube.com
*google.com
*hotmail.com
Anyways if you want to read more about it go to mrmyo.org and click on the link!
