The UN has received word of a bombing in the Jabel Moun area of western Darfur, residents of the area have said some 114 people could have been killed, and many have fled their homes into neighboring Chad. So far additional help has been declined and only African troops are being allowed to come and help. Hopefully this can all be resolved soon.

In a recent article, china has finally began to start pressuring Sudan about the growing crisis in Darfur. China, under pressure, has asked the Sudanese government to start doing more to help the people in Darfur. One of the reasons that China has finally decided to help is because of renown film director Steven Speilburg. Who has dropped out of helping the Chinese with the upcoming Olympics. China has pressured Sudan but so far only 9,000 of the 26,000 troops sent to help have been deployed.

Today in an article,  President Bush displeasure with the situation in Darfur was stated. Bush expressed frustration about the crisis in Darfur and has given 12 out of the 100 million contribution to Rawanda, to help with a 7000 troop deploment in western Darfur. I think that this cotribution is a good idea, but this is 5 years to late. This needed to have been done much earlier, but this is a good, very important step for the people in Darfur.

Today, everyone in mrmayo’s class was assigned to find a post on the trouble in Darfur that is also about the Olympics.   A brief summary of the problems is this: Because of China continuing to stop and drastic actions people are unhappy with the thought of the Olympics appearing in China.  The reason China is doing this is that a large percentage of China’s oil comes form Sudan and does not want that to be jepordized. Apparently renown film director Steven Spielberg was helping China with a project regarding the Olympics and has just recently decided to pull out. This is going to have a big impact and hopefully everything can be solved peacefully. Today in mrmayo’s class we all read a article on Frederick Douglas. Frederick Douglas was an extraordinary man, he was an abolitionist, an a human rights, and a woman’s rights activist. Douglass dedicated his life to helping people in need and achieving justice for all. In addition to being such a dedicated activist Douglass served as an advisor to presidents. He served as US Marshall of the District of Columbia during the term of Rutherford B. Hayes. President James Garfield also appointed him as the District of Columbia’s Recorder of Deeds. Then in 1889 President Benjamin Harrison appointed him to be the US minister in Haiti. Later he was appointed to serve as Secretary of  the Commission  of Santo Domingo.

Douglass was born into slavery but escaped to the north at age 20. Then he settled down in Massachusetts where he stayed with his wife and join the abolitionist movement.

Aside to being an abolitionist Douglass had his own weekly newspaper called the North Star.

Douglass played an important role in many different rights movements and will be remembered as a important part in the road to justice.

This post today is a summary of an article that i have just read about the situation in Darfur. For those of you that don’t know their is genocide going on in Darfur. The Sudanese government has done nothing and is actually arming the janjaweed, which are the tribe that is committing the genocide. No one is helping and the crisis is forcing to make the refugees to flee into the neighboring country of Chad. However in the article a coup is going on in Chad, and if the rebels succeed it could seriously jeopardize the refugees that are there. Another problem is the safety of the aid workers there. No one knows how this coup will play out, but if the rebels win this will spell disaster for refugees and aid workers there.

As always, please feel free to leave a comment.
