Today in mrmayo’s class we all read a article on Frederick Douglas. Frederick Douglas was an extraordinary man, he was an abolitionist, an a human rights, and a woman’s rights activist. Douglass dedicated his life to helping people in need and achieving justice for all. In addition to being such a dedicated activist Douglass served as an advisor to presidents. He served as US Marshall of the District of Columbia during the term of Rutherford B. Hayes. President James Garfield also appointed him as the District of Columbia’s Recorder of Deeds. Then in 1889 President Benjamin Harrison appointed him to be the US minister in Haiti. Later he was appointed to serve as Secretary of the Commission of Santo Domingo.
Douglass was born into slavery but escaped to the north at age 20. Then he settled down in Massachusetts where he stayed with his wife and join the abolitionist movement.
Aside to being an abolitionist Douglass had his own weekly newspaper called the North Star.
Douglass played an important role in many different rights movements and will be remembered as a important part in the road to justice.
