Archive for March, 2008One theme from Fredrick Douglas’s biography was the theme of hopelessness. This theme is very prevalent in this book because Douglas is a slave and at that time most slaves stayed enslaved for life. Another thing is that he has no family which can only enforce the hopelessness that Fredrick Douglas must have felt. ~one9 In mrmayo’s class we are reading Fredrick Douglas’s biography. In class we where supposed to find three important passages and explain why you chose each passage. Passages: Passage #1: I used to steal a bag…..and their sleep on the floor. Why?: This shows the harsh living conditions slaves had to live in at that time, and why so many wanted to escape. Passage #2: My mother was dead, my grandmother lived far off. Why?: Many slaves, like Douglas had no family ties and where not bound to their home. Passage #3: Her ( his new master) face was made of heavenly smiles and her voice of tranquil music. Why?: This shows that his new master was much better than his older one and hopefully his life will change. ~one9 In mrmayo’s class we are reading the biography of Fredrick Douglas. Then we had to pick 6 key scenes in the book. My scenes are as listed below: Scene 1: Quote;”I would crawl into this bag and their sleep on the cold, damp, clay floor.” This shows the horrible living conditions of Douglas and how bad slaves had it back then. Scene 2: Quote;”Our food was a coarse corn meal boiled. This was called mush.”This also illustrates how bad living as a slave was, and because of this might be the reason for the next quote. Scene 3: Quote;”…..I left Colonel Lloyd’s plantation. I left it with joy. Just as this quote says, this is a turning point for Douglas, he is leaving the country and is hopeful for a better life in the city. Scene 4: Quote;”We sailed out of Miles River for Baltimore on Saturday morning.” Once again this is a follow-up of the leaving of Colonel Lloyd’s plantation. Douglas is traveling towards what he hopes to be a better life. Scene 5: Quote;”In the afternoon of that day, we reached Annapolis, capital of the state.”This shows that Douglas has finally reached the city and is hoping to leave the hard life of a plantation slave behind him. Scene 6: Quote;”It was the face of my new mistress, Sophia Auld….brightening up my pathway with the light of happiness. As the quote says, Douglas feels happy seeing the kind face of his new master. He hopes that good things are to follow and he can begin his new life as a city slave. ~one9 For any reader that doesn’t know, mrmayo’s class along with many other people commented about the situation in Darfur. We all commented on the Many Voices For Darfur blog, and we got a bunch of comments. I think it was really cool and i really thought that these people felt passionately about the situation in Darfur, and really wrote their heart out. Anyways, im glad we did it and hopefully it might change something for the better. ~one9 Whether it is telling the truth, doing chores, or helping a neighbor, every kid has the responsibilities, responsibilities to do the right thing. That’s also not too different with nations, and the world has the responsibility to help Darfur, and do whatever in its power to aide If we want to help Darfur we need to take responsibility into our own hands, and as I have said everyone has a responsibility, one of those responsibilities is to help ~One9 As some of you might know mrmayo’s class will be participating in a online project called Many Voices. This project is to raise awareness for Darfur by commenting on the Many Voices blog. The situation in Darfur is tragic, their is mass genocide going on and so far the US government has not helped at all. The goal of this project is to raise awareness and get people to understand the tragedy that is going on as you read this. So please, comment on the Many Voices blog, and help save Darfur. ~One9 |
