Book Report # 1
Fallen Angels
The book Fallen Angels is about a man named Richie Perry who goes and fights in the Vietnam War. I enjoyed this book immensely because it was an amazing book to read and it addressed one of the bloodiest wars of our nation’s history. In the book Perry goes to Vietnam. Early on in the book he meets a man named Peewee. Peewee and Perry become close friends and soon Perry meets more men. Perry and Peewee see how brutal war is when a friend of Perry’s named Johnson steps on a mine and dies. Perry soon discovers that he got more than he bargained for as the fighting gets more serious, such as village raids and artillery attacks. Throughout all this Perry’s and Peewee’s bond of friendship has grown thicker and they have become vicious fighters. Perry is volunteered to go with an elite squad to rescue prisoners but is ambushed. Perry is rescued himself and gets away and for a time after that nothing major happens. Then later in the story Perry and Peewee go with their squad to help some of the Vietnamese soldiers but are attacked by a massive number of Vietcong, and have to fight their way out. After a brush with death Perry and Peewee are shaken but continue as usual. Then in a hair raising climax Perry and Peewee’s patrol is ambushed. The amount of enemies greatly outnumbers their own and forces the patrol to split up. This forces Perry and Peewee to hide in an abandoned hole and pray that the Vietcong army marching above them doesn’t check their hiding place.
Perry and Peewee are almost found but manage to get away. They go back to the pick-up zone and look for a helicopter. A helicopter comes and saves them along with another soldier who is being held hostage. However as the helicopter flies away Perry is hit in the leg.
Perry goes to a hospital and finds that he will be ok but must go home. Peewee was also hurt and he has to go too. Then on the plane ride back Perry remembers all of the people he met and thinks about his journey from the beginning to the end of his adventure.
The protagonist of the story is Perry, because the story revolves around him. The antagonist is the Vietcong, who is the enemy force that Perry and the American army fight throughout the book.
I would strongly recommend this book because it was written well and the author included many details, my favorites being details about the battles that Perry fights. It was one of the best war stories I have ever read. However some areas of the book are a bit graphic but other than that it was a truly amazing book and it was very exciting to read.
