Book Report #2

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

For my book report I read a book called Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of life. Jeremy is a boy that lives in New York City and his dad has died. Jeremy and his best friend Lizzy are going back to the apartment where they both live when they get a package addressed to Jeremy’s mom. They go back into the apartment and open the box. Inside the box they find newspaper from five years ago, the year that Jeremy’s dad died. After looking through the box they find a very strange box. The box has four keyholes and engraved on the top it says: The meaning of life for Jeremy Fink to open on his 13th birthday.

Jeremy and Lizzy are confused but they also find a letter from Jeremy’s mom’s lawyer and it says that the keys have been lost. Jeremy and Lizzy show Jeremy’s mom and then try to figure out how to open the box in time for Jeremy’s 13th birthday; which is in a month. They take the box to a lock shop but find it is impossible to open the box without destroying whatever is inside. Then, Lizzy suggests that they search the lawyer’s office, but find that they have moved. Undaunted they decide to go and search the building anyway. After they go to the building they are caught by a security guard and are charged with breaking and entering.

They go to the police station and are sent to serve community service, they are assigned to help a pawnbroker move items. The next day they are surprised to find a limo waiting to pick them up and they go to the pawnshop. They meet a man named Mr. Oswald and he tells them that they will be sending items back to their owners. They bring the book to its owner and also are sent on other jobs. While this is happening Jeremy decides to ask everyone that they help out what they think the meaning of life is. Jeremy asks many different people, each with their own definition of the meaning of life. And even then he still doesn’t know what to believe.

Soon their community service is over, and Mr. Oswald has to move. Before he goes however he lets Jeremy and Lizzy choose any object in his shop to take as a gift. Jeremy finds a giant suitcase full of keys, excited he asks if he can have it and Mr. Oswald says yes and later that same day Jeremy and Lizzy find three of the missing four keys buried in the pile. They are happy but it is bitter sweet, Jeremy’s birthday is soon and they have to go to his grandmother’s house for his birthday. In the remaining time they search and search but to no avail.

They go to Jeremy’s grandmother’s house and stay there for the remaining time until Jeremy’s 13th birthday. On his 13th birthday Jeremy is happy, but very sad. He, Lizzy, his mom, and his grandmother all go down to a lake to open presents and have cake. Their Lizzy gives him a key. As it turns out she had found the key in the big pile but had kept it to surprise Jeremy for his birthday. Overjoyed Jeremy and Lizzy rid out to he middle of the lake to open the box. One at a time Jeremy slides the keys in, each clicking into place. He slides the box open to find……That if you want to know the meaning of life I’d suggest you read this book. I would really recommend this book because it’s very heartfelt and the characters really seem to be real people with real personalities.
